A little device known as a permanent pacemaker (PPM) acts as a backup electrical system for your heart. It has one or two leads placed inside the heart and is implanted beneath the skin and below the collarbone. An electrical system controls the rate of your heartbeat. The sinus node, the heart's natural pacemaker, produces an electrical impulse at the beginning of every regular heartbeat. Initially propagating through the top chambers, this impulse is then sent by specialized electrical wires to the lower chambers. The heart may beat too slowly or stop briefly if any portion of this natural electrical system develops a malfunction. This condition, known as bradycardia, causes exhaustion, dizziness, and blackouts.
